A new house in Jaffrey, NH

Inspired by vernacular New England churches and mills as well as ancient Italian architecture, this small house is a temple on the side of a hill with a southern prospect. The regular rhythm of oversized windows fool the eye as to the scale of the house. 12-inch thick walls afford both visual and thermal comfort. A timber roof frame and massive fireplace are powerfully expressive. Sliding hand-painted fabric screens afford varying degrees of privacy between the sleeping loft and the living room. The owner, a skilled gardener, enjoys a panorama of nature from all living spaces. The owner has said, "I shall never be able to adequately convey to you just how much pleasure this structure gives me, practically & aesthetically." This home was cited by Marvin Windows and Doors in its 2010 design competition.

"A real building is one on which the eye can light and stay lit."
